It's not easy to find the right church, neither do I believe that there is a perfect church for me out there, but there is definitely a church out there where you'll feel welcomed, at home, and at the house of the Lord, where you can feel the spirit of God. It definitely takes patient (I hope you got that) and persistency. Especially for those that have/are moving to a new area or city because or university etc. Most people who already have a church would find the same church they used to go to in their home country or they find a evangelist that invites them to church and then they join. I know that during freshers week a couple of churches have their own stand where they evangelist and invite a lot of students to their church, a couple ask for your name and number where they will call you a couple of times afterwards to invite you to church on repeat. I know this can get very annoying because I have once been the student they kept calling.
Regardless, you and God alone are the only ones to know which church is good for you, there might be one or three churches you really like but at the end of the day you will have to decide which church to call '"My Church". If you have no Idea where to start then let us have a look at a couple of helpful points that might ease your way to the right church for you. I'd like you to reflect on these points and pray and seek the Lord through the process of finding a church.
I know I say this in all my post but it really is everything. Prayer is the way you can talk to God and he will reply, if you ask him to guide you to find the right church for you he will. Therefor make Prayer a number one priority during this journey.
Church Denomination Firstly you need to know what Denomination you belong to, which church group do you like? There are Catholic, Methodist,Baptist, Pentecost, Assemblies of God and so on and on. Do a little bit about the churches and see which one the Lord calls you to.
Church Service Consider what type of service you would like. In catholic churches for example they have very structured and organised services, and that every single week, they know how long everything might take and when to finish. But Pentecost for example they Start at a specific time but might extend the ending time because they mainly let the Holy Spirit lead. They have two different ways of having service but both cover the same things, Prayer, Worship, Giving and sermon, however they take different times and orders.
Worship and Prayer Like I have mentioned above, different churches have different ways of services. I have attended two churches, Catholic and Pentecostal Churches and I can give you a brief list of how they work. Catholic: Sunday Service 11:30am - 12:30 - Worship - Thanksgiving - Sermon - Communion - Prayer - Tithe - Closing Prayer Pentecostal: Sunday Service 11:30 - 14:30 (most likely to go over the time) - Opening prayer - Worship & Praises - Sermon - Communion (Every 1st Sunday of the Month) - Tithe & Offering - Closing Prayer Don't get it wrong, both churches services are beautiful and suitable for each individual depending on your preferences.
Style The way you dress also plays a role in finding the right church. Many Church have a way of dressing. They prefer appropriate ways of dressing, a particular length of your skirt or dress, t-shirt or a shirt and ripped jeans or not make a difference. In some churches anything will go, doesn't matter how you attend it's all fine, that leans more to a catholic church. Therefor consider what you would like.
Growth Think about if you can grow in the church, do you feel welcomed? do you feel the Holy Spirit? Is this a place where you want to Worship God and call "My Church" to the point where you call the community my church family?
After you thought about this points and Prayed, do some research on what churches might be around your area, check their website out and maybe visit a couple of times, then pray about the churches and ask God to direct you do the right one. I believe if you dedicate your time and prayers in this you will find the right Church for yourself. I hope this Blog post was helpful if this is the short journey you want to start. I wish you all the Best and like always, feel free to Email me if you got any worries or question.
Yours truly
